ICE FINDER
Icefinder is an innovative research project aimed at developing a new generation of ice sensors for aviation and other industrial applications.
The underlying HYDROSENS technology enables the early detection of moisture, water films, and ice formation even in molecularly thin layers—long before dangerous ice deposits form. The goal is to significantly increase the safety of airplanes, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles while simultaneously reducing the energy consumption of de-icing systems.
Furthermore, the technology opens up new applications in fields such as wind energy, heat pumps, transportation infrastructure, and autonomous systems. Icefinder combines cutting-edge nanomaterial research with practical aviation development and sustainable technologies.
Designed for the most extreme conditions in aviation.
The technology behind Icefinder
At the heart of the project is the innovative HYDROSENS technology, a novel thin-film sensor based on hydrophilic carbon nanomaterials. Unlike conventional ice sensors, HYDROSENS detects the early stages of icing—from individual water molecules and moisture films to the transition from water to ice.
The sensor surface reacts with measurable changes in its electrical resistance. This allows for reliable differentiation between a dry surface, a water film, and ice. Early detection provides valuable response time for de-icing and protection systems.
Thanks to its compact design, the technology can be flexibly integrated into critical areas of aircraft, drones, and other technical systems.
